Somaek—the iconic Korean mix of soju and beer—is evolving beyond a drink mixed at the table into a branded ready-to-drink (RTD) category. With the launch of canned products such as Daily Beer and KHEE Soju’s KHEE Somaek and Sunyang Soju’s Sunyang Oak Somaek, consumers are beginning to choose somaek based not only on mixing ratios but also on brand identity and flavor profile.
Global interest in Korea’s signature mixed drink has also grown in recent months after BLACKPINK’s Rosé and actor Daniel Dae Kim introduced somaek on international television programs. Combined with the rapid expansion of the RTD beverage market, the trend has accelerated efforts to transform somaek into a convenient, finished product.
According to industry sources on August 5, Sunyang Soju recently entered the RTD category with Sunyang Oak Somaek, a canned beverage combining lager beer with Sunyang Oak Soju and oak barrel-aged rice distilled spirit. The product focuses on delivering the familiar taste of traditional somaek in a convenient ready-to-drink format.
Daily Beer and premium distilled soju brand KHEE have taken a different approach with KHEE Somaek, positioning the product as a premium canned interpretation of Korea’s iconic cocktail.
KHEE Somaek combines KHEE’s distilled spirit—made from 100% organic rice and matured in traditional Korean earthenware jars—with Daily Beer’s craft pale ale brewed using Cascade hops. Rather than simply mixing beer and soju in a fixed ratio, the companies spent approximately one year conducting blind taste tests and formulation research to create a balanced combination of premium distilled spirits and craft beer.
While traditional somaek has always depended on each drinker’s personal mixing preferences, KHEE Somaek was designed from the outset as a complete beverage. The product aims to move beyond the image of the classic Korean “bomb shot” consumed at company dinners and instead present somaek as a premium K-drink suited for food pairings, social gatherings, and modern lifestyles.
Ahead of its official launch, KHEE Somaek debuted at an exclusive preview event in Seoul’s Cheongdam district attended by domestic and international artists, cultural figures, and celebrities. Following the event, the product expanded into CU convenience stores nationwide, broadening consumer accessibility while reinforcing its premium positioning.
Although both products belong to the emerging canned somaek category, they target different consumer experiences.
Sunyang Oak Somaek emphasizes convenience by recreating the familiar flavor of traditional somaek through a combination of lager beer and oak-aged soju. KHEE Somaek, meanwhile, seeks to elevate the category through the pairing of premium distilled soju and craft pale ale, offering a more refined flavor profile and a premium brand experience.
Differences in the choice of distilled spirits, beer styles, flavor composition, and overall product concept mean consumers can now compare canned somaek based on characteristics such as lager versus pale ale, refreshing drinkability versus hop-forward aromas, and overall taste balance.
The emergence of canned somaek also reflects broader changes in alcohol consumption trends.
Rather than simply drinking more, today’s consumers increasingly seek beverages that match their personal tastes and occasions while exploring new flavors and product concepts. Although overall drinking frequency has declined, demand for distinctive RTD beverages and innovative alcoholic products continues to grow.
The category also addresses practical challenges faced by solo drinkers and single-person households. Traditional somaek requires purchasing both beer and soju, measuring the desired ratio, and storing leftover alcohol. Ready-to-drink canned somaek eliminates these inconveniences by delivering a consistent experience in a single package.
Consumption habits are changing as well.
Whereas traditional somaek has long been associated with group drinking occasions and company gatherings, canned somaek is designed for individual enjoyment whenever and wherever consumers choose.
As a result, the criteria for evaluating somaek may also evolve. Instead of focusing primarily on mixing techniques or the ratio of beer to soju, consumers may increasingly evaluate products based on the quality of the distilled spirit, the style of beer used, flavor balance, and overall craftsmanship.
Industry observers believe these developments could transform somaek from a customizable drinking recipe into an established alcoholic beverage category where consumers choose products based on brand, quality, and personal taste.
