CU is launching a Japanese-style lager, ‘Matsuda Beer Can,’ in collaboration with popular YouTuber ‘Matsuda Manager.’
Matsuda Beer Can is a product developed under the concept of an authentic Japanese-style beer created by Matsuda Manager, a Korean-Japanese entrepreneur and influencer. Made with Koshihikari rice, the beer delivers a smooth texture and a clean, refreshing finish.
The product features a crisp lager style with a dry aftertaste preferred by Korean consumers, making it a great match for spicy foods and greasy dishes. To achieve a clear appearance and a clean mouthfeel, the beer was filtered using diatomaceous earth filtration, a method commonly used in Japanese breweries to remove residual proteins and impurities after fermentation.
CU’s launch of the Japanese-style lager reflects the growing interest in Japanese alcoholic beverages among Korean consumers. According to the Korea Customs Service, Japan’s alcoholic beverage imports reached a record high last year, with total imports increasing 13% year-on-year. Japanese beer imports also rose by 17.3%.
To celebrate the launch, CU will offer a limited-edition Matsuda Beer glass set through the Pocket CU app at a discounted price. In addition, a fan meeting event with Matsuda Buchang will be held through his YouTube channel.
BGF Retail’s liquor team MD Hwang Cheol-jung said, “Ahead of the peak season for alcohol sales, we developed differentiated products in collaboration with popular influencers to quickly respond to changing consumer trends. CU will continue to introduce various products and events that meet diverse consumer needs and lead market trends.”
